I have used North Face hiking shoes exclusively for the last 16 years. All have been of the Hedgehog line of hiking shoes. For this purchase, I chose the lighter weight Truckee to use on maintained trails. The Truckee fits true to size an width and the arch support is adequate for me. It is comfortable and required very little breaking in.

I’ve had these for about a week now and have walked ~20 miles. So far, so good. Was actually surprised by how comfortable they are for the price point.

I have been using the North Face Hedgehog series shoes for more than 10 years and have always been comfortable in size 8D, so I ordered the Truckee in size 8D. The Hedgehog series have always felt true to size, supportive and comfortable with little to no break-in required. The Truckee feels a little larger and a bit wider than the Hedgehogs do. It also feels slightly loose in the heel. I’m afraid to go down a half size because a little too large is better than a little too small. The Truckee is lightweight and cooler than the Hedgehogs because they are breathable while that Hedgehogs are waterproof. In my old age I no longer go on long hikes in rough terrain so the Truckee should do nicely even if a bit loose. Thicker socks should do the trick.

I’m an older guy and remember good hiking shoes, such as from Sportiva, my favorite brand for many years. Sportiva discontinued the line I liked, so I had to look for a substitute: I truly disliked the Sportiva replacement. The North Face looked a bit like the old Sportiva GTX in the ad, so I ordered it. While I think it’s an acceptable product (I’ve kept the shoes), I’m disappointed how flimsy they feel compared to the old Sportivas. As a friend commented, “the crapification” of everything continues.
